Additional Details
Ireland 1955 Gem 4 piece Proof Set. Only 4 denominations were
struck for Ireland in 1955, the halfcrown, florin, shilling, and six
pence, all struck in Cupro Nickel. About 5 or 6 of each were struck in
Proof at the Royal Mint in England. Of these, most were mishandled due
to the London practice of selling coins, even proof coins in open trays,
where buyers would freely handle the coins, leaving fingerprints and
worse. This set was put together over 12 years, carefully buying the
best available of each denomination. The larger halfcrown and florin
are especially difficult in Gem condition, due to the difficulty of
finding the coins with the larger surface areas being fully preserved
without wiping or hairline marks. The 4 coins are listed individually
on my website, although they are only being sold as a set. The coins
grade as follows:Halfcrown. NGC Proof 66 Cameo.
Florin. NGC Proof 66 Cameo.
Shilling. NGC Proof 65 Cameo.
Six Pence. NGC Proof 65 Cameo.
Each coin is a stunning white Gem with heavily frosted devices and deep mirror fields.
There are no records of a complete 1955 Irish Proof Set being offered since the few original coins were sold singly during the 1950's. Rare and believed Finest Known. $13,000.
