Ireland Hiberno Norse. Sihtric III Olafsson. 995-1036. Phase II, c.1015-1035. Silver Long Cross Penny.

A Phase II Hiberno Norse silver penny.  Phase II Hiberno Norse were struck in Dublin, c. c. 1015 - 1035, in imitation of the silver pennies being struck in England under King Aethelred I.  They are distinguished from the Phase I coins, by the addition of pellets in the quadrants of the reverse.

S. 6125A, 1.24 g., 17 mm. Phase II coinage. Difelin (Dublin) mint signature; ‘Nirinn,’ moneyer. Struck c. 1018-1035.  Obv legend + IИTRC REX IDIFNI around draped bust right, w inverted crozier behind neck.  Rx. Legend + ИI RIИ N MO DFИ around voided long cross, with triple crescent ends and pellet in each angle.

SCBI 8 (BM), 80 (same obv. die); SCBI 22 (Copenhagen), 88 (same dies); SCBI 32 (Belfast), 110 (same dies).

Good Extremely Fine.  Well centered and deeply stuck, w all devices and legends sharp.  Gold tone w blue iridescence. Rare. $3200.
