A Phase I Hiberno Norse silver penny.  Phase I Hiberno Norse were struck in Dublin, c. 995 - 1020, in imitation of the silver pennies being struck in England under King Aethelred II.

S.6109. 1d 1.06 g, 20 mm, Bust King Ethelred left, w cloak of 5 folds held by toga button, a pellet on the lower lip, a 2nd pellet on the throat, and a 3rd pellet behind the neck.  Legend around reads xDYMNROExMNEGI.  Rx. legend reads  xFIE MIEN MN.O DYEN around long cross w empty quadrants.

Extremely Fine.  Well centered w good strike showing all devices and legends clearly.  Detracting small old marks under fine blue gray and gold tone w some crimping.  Very Rare.  $4500.
